This is the first of many small projects we will be building alongside our kids. Simple stories, experiments, and ideas meant to teach life skills early while we learn together as a family and explore how we think about financial independence and the FIRE movement.
This is not meant to be a lecture. It is a way to plant fundamental skills early in life by introducing ideas like saving, patience, and intentional choices in a way that feels natural for kids.
The story follows two friends who begin in the same place with the same opportunities. One tends to use what they have right away. The other saves a little for later. Neither path is framed as right or wrong. They are simply different choices, and the story shows how those choices shape future options.
That is the core of how we think about FIRE.
For us, financial independence and the FIRE movement are not about retiring early at all costs or chasing a specific number. They are about making intentional decisions with money, time, and energy so future choices remain flexible.
We did not write this story to turn our kids into financial experts. We wrote it to help them see that small choices matter, and that planning ahead can create flexibility and freedom later in life.
As you read through the story and images below, you will notice that not everything is explained. That is intentional. We want curiosity, questions, and conversations to grow over time, both for our kids and for anyone else reading along.
For our family, FIRE is not about escaping life.
It is about choosing it on purpose.
